Family of dead toddler looks for justice When Jasaun French drank his bottle, an angelic like tune often filled the room. His grandmother, Ingrid French, remembers looking to find the source of the sound, only to realize it was coming from her grandson. brings a meaning to each of us, an inspiration, said French, 43, who lives in Prince George County. called him my bun bun. she remembers the 2 year old as an angel, three months after the boy succumbed in February to a skull fracture and other injuries he suffered as a 1 month old infant, allegedly at the hands of his mother former boyfriend, whose trial is scheduled to begin in September. seems like there no justice it not going to bring Jasaun back, but it sends the wrong message, she said. just a waiting game. He was indicted by a grand jury March 24 on first degree murder and released on a $65,000 corporate bond. Fowler is accused of abusing Jasaun in November 2006, when the boy, born Oct. 17, 2006, was 5 weeks old. Fowler has pleaded not guilty and denies the charges, said Brian Denton, the district public defender for Prince George County. Denton spoke on behalf of Janet Hart, assistant public defender for Prince George County, who will represent Fowler. A bond hearing is scheduled for Friday. Fowler trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 8. Charging documents allege Fowler called 911 on Nov. 30, 2006, when he had sole custody of the infant, to report Jasaun fell off a couch and sustained massive head injuries. at Children Hospital advised that the injuries suffered by [Jasaun] could not have been caused by simply falling off the couch onto a carpeted and padded floor, said county homicide detective Michael Delaney in charging documents. According to the documents, since suffering the initial injuries in 2006, Jasaun was placed in foster care until the time of his death. After the head trauma that November, he had numerous surgeries and never recovered. More than two years later, on Feb. 6, county police and fire officials responded to the home of Jasaun foster mother in the 10800 block of Waco Drive in Upper Marlboro after the woman reported he was unresponsive, Delaney said. Police found the toddler not breathing. Jasaun was taken to Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton and pronounced dead. He had a fractured skull, ribs and a lacerated liver and had succumbed to the November 2006 head injury, according to charging documents. Ingrid French said her grandson November 2006 injuries which left his head dented and turned slightly to the left never went away. She believes Jasaun was partially blind and sustained brain damage, which hampered him from ever crawling, walking or talking. She said Jasaun family kept in contact with his foster mother, and that he occasionally stayed with his mother. Ingrid French declined to say where her daughter lives now. Ingrid French said between August and November 2006, when she lived in the 9000 block of Good Luck Road in Lanham, Fowler was never violent or particularly angry. She does not believe that Jaycari, who lives with Shamika, has ever been abused. Shamika French did not return calls for comment by press time, and the phone number listed for Renardo Fowler was disconnected in late April. Denton, the public defender, said Fowler had no contact with the boy after 2006. He declined to comment on Jasaun initial injuries or whether he believed the boy was abused by anyone else. never seen a case where a person was charged with committing a homicide where they didn have custody or contact with the child in over two years, Denton said. is going to be a really interesting issue why do they think what happened to the child in 2006 caused him to die in 2009? It starts to get speculative out there. Prince George County State Attorney Office will prosecute the case.
